Prononc. et Orth. : [katjɔ ̃]. Ac. Compl. 1842, s.v. cathion, renvoie à cassion où elle signale : ,,L'orthographe étymologique de ce mot serait cathion.`` Lar. 19eenregistre séparément cassion et cation : ,,Orthographe régulière du mot cassion, qui est cependant plus usité.`` Lar. 19eSuppl. 1890 donne uniquement cathion. Nouv. Lar. ill. enregistre indépendamment cathion, cation, cassion (qui d'apr. lui n'est plus usité). Guérin 1892 admet parallèlement cassion ou cation. Lar. 20eet Quillet 1965 admettent cation ou cathion. Cf. aussi Lar. encyclop. qui insiste néanmoins sur le fait qu',,on écrit aussi à tort cathion``. Rob., Pt Rob., Pt Lar. 1968 et Lar. Lang. fr. donnent cation. Étymol. et Hist. 1838 cathion, cassion (Ac. Compl. 1842). Mot forgé par le physicien angl. Faraday, en 1834 (Res. Electr., 1839, § 655 ds NED : I propose to distinguish such bodies by calling those anions which go to the anode of the decomposing body; and those passing to the cathode, cations).
